In order to be successful in your professional and social life, you must learn and improve social skills

Me and my wife both are from different social structures, with widely non-identical in language, clothing, food, culture and lifestyle but mingling with the people of different social structures has helped me to improve my social skills day by day. I also have been a part of some of the well known organizations, and now a high school teacher in a place that is much different from my native birth place in culture and social structures. 

So, I think the words from my experiences and mistakes will help you to become a better social person with improved social skills. 

Wherever you are, either among your friends and family or in the workplace, you need to be a better social person in order to mingle with others in an effective manner. 

If you struggle to be a better social person like me in my early days, or want to learn the required skills to improve your social skills, then this article is appropriate for you.

You can improve social skills by improving your verbal and nonverbal skills along with maintaining some great habits. Some of them are:  Ask some engaging questions, Express your ideas in simple, clear and concise language which is easy to understand, Find the reason to appreciate and be Generous in it, Talk and behave according to the age group, Spread love, joy and smile, because they are contagious, Understand the culture and predominant ideologies, Do not be aggressive rather be humble and polite.

Happy and cheerful face is pleasing to everyone. No one likes to see a frowned face with a bad mood.Cheerful face creates a positive environment by offering positive energy.

So, the solution is to find some reason to appreciate, there is something good in everyone, we just need to find it and generously convey good and positive words to the audience.

4. Always display Good Manners

Your manner speaks about how you are. No one likes to be close to a bad mannered person, so if you want to build good and quality relationships with your friends, relatives or office colleagues then you must develop good manners.

  • Use the words  ‘Please’ and ‘May I’ to display your politeness
  • Say ‘Thank You’ 
  • Do not Interrupt others
  • Always respect Others’ Opinion

5. Your Body Language is an essential matter

You may be very polite and humble in nature but if you are poor in managing your body language during the communication, you will create a mess. 

Remember, your body language speaks a lot of things about you.

Displaying a good and professional body language will help you to be a better social person.

  • Head movements or nodding
  • Rubbing your fingers or hand
  • Standing position 
  • Sitting style

6. Be Up to Date on Current Events

Sometimes people may discuss some current events and if you have no clue then you will be completely lost and detached from the discussion or feel abandoned.

So, being up to date with the current events and news help you to communicate well and become better in being a social person.

Negative thoughts are destructive in nature, it destroys relationships and creates misunderstanding, and also produces an unwanted situation. 

So, carrying negative thoughts will disturb your mind and prevent your social abilities to be improved.

8. Express your ideas in simple, clear and concise language which is easy to understand

Some people think that speaking with standard and complicated words makes them more respected and better in social behaviour, where the actual reality is entirely different, understanding your audience and communicating accordingly with simple, clear and concise language helps people to understand easily, this creates better communication and as a result improves your social behavior.

9. Improve your vocabulary on a regular basis

Vocabularies are the means to convey your thoughts, ideas, emotions and knowledge to other people. 

So, better you are in vocabularies, stronger you are in communication or being social.

10. Develop your English skill, if you are not a native English speaker

If you are not a native English speaker then it is essential that you develop your English language skill, to speak, write, understand and read fluently and clearly. 

As soon as you will be communicating with a person outside of your language group, you may require this language, as English is considered the international language to communicate globally. 

11. Acquire the basic grammar knowledge

Having a clear and sound understanding of grammar is compulsory to establish good communication to improve your social relation.

When you remember the people’s name, it simply shows that you value them and they are important to you.
