 In short, a manager is a person who actually manages something, it can be a group of people or the activities of an organization or company.

We can divide the types of responsibilities of a manager into two broad categories. They are:

  • People manager
  • Activity manager
  • Responsibility of a people manager  is to lead a small or large group of people and utilise all the potential of them to  reach the ultimate goal of the organisation or business.

The example of a people manager can be a sales manager.  The sales manager takes care of a group of people who are in charge of selling something.

  • The responsibilities of an activity manager is to take care of all the activities of  an organisation or business for achieving all the objectives  set by the organisation or business. 

Examples of activity managers can be project managers and product managers.  A project manager is responsible to handle  the projects of the organisation, whereas a product manager is responsible to take care of each and every area of the product of an organisation.

Even though we can see that there are two types of managers according to their activities, but if you go deep down, you’ll find that it is more confusing and complex in nature. Let us understand this with an example of a marketing manager. It may seem that a marketing manager is responsible for only the marketing areas of a business but this is not  all the responsibilities of a marketing manager. The marketing manager is also responsible to lead all the staff who are working  as the marketing associates.  Therefore, you can see that the responsibilities of a marketing manager is not only limited to leading a group of people rather also taking care of the activities of the marketing area of a business. 

 This same thing can even happen with the different  categories of managers.
